The next meeting will be held on Friday, March 18, at 7:30 pm. This month, we’ll meet at Ed Fry’s house to check out his Rans S-16 project. Ed has been flying this Subaru powered hot rod for quite a few years now, but he tore it down over the winter to install a fuel-injected 180hp Lycoming. There is a lot of work involved with a changeover of this magnitude such as the motor mount, exhaust, baffling, cowl, prop, etc.
Ed’s house is located very near to the Altoona-Blair County Airport. From Rt 866, take the Airport Road towards the airport, then take the first and only right hand turn onto Dowrick Drive. Ed’s house is the 3rd on the right.

President Paul Nuss reports good progress on the Tailwind. The wooden wing frames are hanging in place on the fuselage with all of the strut attach fittings and struts completed. After a final fitting of the windshield to the wing butt ribs, the wings will come back off to go back to the basement for wiring, varnishing, plywood skinning and countless other details.

Are there any projects out there that we don’t know about? EAA members nearby that we could welcome into the Chapter? How about prospective builders that might need a little information or encouragement? Would-be sport aviation enthusiasts who we could bring into our ranks? Invite them to our meetings!

If anyone hasn’t seen it yet, there is a great program on Discovery Channel called “Flying Wild Alaska.” It airs Friday nights at 9pm. Unfortunately, I believe this Friday will be the season finale, but rumor has it that there will be a Season 2. If you think a 20kt crosswind is a challenge, think again…
